View Full Version : Adult Female Albino Burm Needs Home
FREE TO GOOD HOME:
Spooky is a beautiful adult female Burmese Python with EXCELLENT color/pattern and breed line. She has really nice yellows/peaches and whites with a strong pattern. She was born June 12, 1992 (yes, she's 16 years old) and we've had her since she was only a few weeks old. She's very tame - we used to be very involved with PNHS and did the outreach program with her; she was the picture snake at the Science Center show and at the Cougar Mountain shows back in the 90's. She was "accidentally" bred in about 1996 but she laid her eggs in the water (!) so they were toast by the time we got home. She's not as big as she could be - 11' - but that's my fault. I have not power fed her because I didn't want her to be really big really fast. She's a good eater, large rabbits that are fed unconcious, a couple every 2-3 weeks. She just shed 8/6. She's very healthy - had a vet checkup last year. Her cage is in a room with it's own heater so the whole room is kept around 85 degrees. We're looking for someone who's EXPERIENCED with large snakes, has a stable living arrangement (not renting or rooming or in a prohibited jurisdiction!) and has the room and food availability. We want to find her a "forever" home - not a "cool for a year" home. We have a wood cage available - it's on wheels, about 5'x6'x2' with two doors, vents, needs to be resealed on the bottom. (See my other post for pics of cage). I don't have time to care for her anymore; too busy working, raising my daughter, finishing a house addition, maintaining livestock and acreage and planning for another kid!
Grant : 425-870-4576 (Please no calls after 8pm! Thanks!) P.S. I'm out of town 9/25-9/30/08.
Hi Grant! Long time no see!

very pretty :) to bad im broke :p hope you find her a good home
Wow, what a gorgeous animal! Wish I had room for something of that size...
Thanks you guys. It's really hard to part with her :( - I work horrendous hours so I really don't have time for her. She's our only reptile left and our house has gotten REALLY small since we had our little girl (now 2). Please pass the word around to people you may think of.

if you still got her in a month or soo look me up by then ill have another cage ready and might be able to take her off your hands ill check with a couple old friends i know atleast one might have room
FHere are some more pictures of the cage and me with Spooky.
We can deliver the cage if you have no truck - or if you're just far away we can meet you somewhere. The cage is on casters, so it rolls easily. Large doors at each end. The floor is solid (we had it replaced with a sturdier floor when we bought it). There was a light fixture in the top and there are holes for wiring, but she pulls the wiring out. There is a shelf about half-way up the wall along the entire length. It's really easy to access and clean. We are located on Camano Island, but we travel to Seattle about once a month.

/cheer i personly think thats the best thing ive ever read on this forum glad to hear she will never need a new home :) been wondering about this one for awhile now
I'm sorry you didn't find anyone, but glad that you're keeping her. Too bad you're so darned busy, you could do outreach with her again. Maybe in a few months you'll have more free time........

i still think its awsome that they are keeping her reguardless of the reasons why.shes still better off with less attention then going to 95% of the ppl out there that would take her if more ppl were as responsible as them there wouldnt be so many sick and or homeless snakes out there
lol what i ment to say was im not sorry they didnt get rid of her :p
....... if more ppl were as responsible as them there wouldnt be so many sick and or homeless snakes out there.....
It's true. There's another side to it though- we can be (and usually are) holier-than-thou about how awful and irresponsible and uncaring the people are who get a big snake like that and then get rid of it a year later- but what about those of us who can't wait to breed every snake we have? I've known people who produce dozens of Burmese, Retics, and Boas year after year. We all know that it's next to impossible to get rid of a full grown common Burm, and now it's obvious that it's not a cakewalk finding a decent home for an albino Burm either. In the space of 2 months, Spooky is the second large female albino Burm that I've heard of locally that needed to be rehomed, and I don't read any forums other than this one and with the exception of PNHS I'm not active in the Herp community. If I know of 2, there are probably more.
15 years ago albino Burms were very expensive, now they are as common as cornsnakes. EVERYONE who buys a snake from a private breeder promises to give it a good home, but a huge percentage of those people are looking to get rid of that snake within 2 years or less. The large professional breeders are going to keep on breeding as long as they can sell the babies, which they always can. It's time for the small private breeders to take a good hard look at the discrepancies between what we preach and what we do.

I agree with Cecelia. I'm guilty of a breeding once every 5 years or so - and I usually have trouble getting rid of them, be they boas or pythons. My troubles come from who I give them to though, I deny about 50 people per one I accept.
On the other side of things, if she needs a home - I am set up and can handle the burms, just gimme a call 425-518-1576

Gosh she is just beautiful.. I just love albino burms (obviously)... what amazing animals!
I really wish they kept the contrast...thats the only reason I prefer albino retics. Some of those baby high gold albino burms are breath-taking though.
dude if i had the room i would snatch spooky up in a heart beat =[

Ohhh if I had the room for her I would love to take her off your hands.. but I only have room for one burm.. bummer:(

I knew Grant years ago in PNHS when Spooky was a baby. I'll bet he still has her. He refused some offers to take her because the people who wanted her didn't strike him as reliable enough. He's a very responsible snake owner.
There is also the problem that there are just so many larger snakes (or well on their way to large) that need homes. Ive been scared over the last few days over the number of retics Im seeing.
I do find it interesting thought, that people seem to get rid of them when they are 7'-9'. I guess that means after that the snakes find better homes or dont make it. Bad odds.
My husband said, "maybe in a couple of years". Which I interpret to be, someone set me up w/ a cage and give me 6 months...
Yes, I'm desperate to get her out of here now. She's on Craigslist - please someone take her before some idiot does! (P.S. I'm out of town 9/25-9/30).
It would be a real shame for this snake to wind up in the wrong hands. If we had ANY room, we would take her, but we just have nowhere for an enclosure that big.
Can't someone here give Spooky a home?
:(
Grant, think about the possibility of trying to sell her or re-home her during the Puyallup Breeders show in October. Even if you didn't want to drag her all the way down here, you could post pictures of her at somebody's booth.
It's too bad that someone in the club doesn't take her- she is a really good outreach snake.
GOD i want her soooo bad.......but i just cant =' [
Josh, you already have a cage for her!
Kevin really wanted her the first time this was posted, but our problem is just that we don't have the actual floor space for the enclosure. :(
There's a very simple solution. Build a platform that is 4 feet high and put your bed on it. Put the Spooky cage under it.
Or I could just sell al my bedroom furniture to make room for the snakes.....:p
There you go. I think you can make it work!
Josh, you already have a cage for her!
dont say that lolz =P
I would really love to take her, too. Again, space. And I promised the hubby no new snakes for a while. :(
Perhaps I can sneak her in the basement? Like when Moe had the black market orca in the basement of Moe's Tavern.

I would love to have her, but my wife would physically kill me.
Probably with a snake.
Actually Scott, I think Spooky is the next logical step for the Frayo household!
All joking aside, I'd like to inject a somewhat sobering and depressing thought here. We've had discussions on this forum recently about keeping and/or giving up our pets.
As I said before, I remember when Grant and his wife bought Spooky as a baby 15 years ago. They are hands-down one of the most dedicated and caring set of snake-owners I've known. The fact that they are giving up Spooky says volumes about the keeping of giant snakes.
This should be a wake-up call to anyone who regularly reads this forum- DON'T BE SO EAGER TO BUY THAT CUTE BABY RETIC OR BURM. Down the road almost everybody who has a giant snake decides to rehome it before the end of it's natural life. They are just way, way too hard to keep.
Having said that, let me say this- if you've ever wanted a big snake, this is a good opportunity to get a really nice one.
I would love to have her, but my wife would physically kill me.

please get her scott so im not tempted to and that way she'll only be a block away =]
I'm incredibly relieved to let you all know that the Adams family has agreed to take Spooky. I know they'll give her an excellent home. Thank you for all of your well wishes!

http://www.soulcare.org/Creation/liger.jpg
holy crap thats HUGE!!
Yep...for some strange reason, when you mix a lion and a tiger, you get a GIGANTIC cat.
It has to be the right mix, though. Tigons are produced by male tigers and female lions, and only grow as big as their parents. According to wikipedia the lionesses produce growth-inhibitors that restrict their offspring's size at maturity.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tigon
On the other hand ligers are produced by male lions and female tigers, and their growth never stops. From the wiki on ligers: "The tiger produces a hormone that sets the fetal liger on a pattern of growth that does not end throughout its life. The hormonal hypothesis is that the cause of the male liger's growth is its sterility — essentially, the male liger remains in the pre-pubertal growth phase. Male ligers also have the same levels of testosterone on average as an adult male lion. In addition, female ligers also attain great size, weighing approximately 700 lb (320 kg) and reaching 10 feet (3.05 m) long on average, and are often fertile." Hercules, a male liger, is the largest non-obese liger and weighs over 1,100 lbs!

And now back to whatever this thread was about in the first place. :)
