Hi all,
First time here.
Are there any salamander breeders here who may have a few salamanders they might be interesting in selling. Or giving away? LOL
I'm primarily interested in fire salamanders, maybe also marble salamanders.
Anyone know anyone who raises them in this area. I guess I'm trying to save gas money, as I live in Gig Harbor.
Thank you for any replies ahead of time!

Hey, salamandergal- The state of WA recently made a huge number of non-native salamanders illegal to own here. You should find out which ones and be careful (and discreet) about what you purchase.
There's info here somewhere on the forum posted by Turtletom about 2 months ago. I'd find it for you but I can't right now, if you can't find it I'll look later.

Hi Cecilia,
I first started to say something about that but out of fear I changed this post.
Thank you for informing me. It doesnt apply to reptiles?

Sure it does- it's an insane and stupid law that outlaws a whole pile of turtles as well.

Here's the link to the state website explaining what's been outlawed.

****...I DO remember reading about this a few months ago, but I wasnt thinking about my returning to one of my favorite hobbies then. I must have just glanced at the information very quickly. So "dangerous" is not just applied to just animals like rattlesnakes or scorpions? Dangerous= non-native? Wow, have I been out of touch!

Cecelia, you've had some very good things to say about this. I will think about this some more.
Maybe certain areas of the country, these laws make some sense but in many ways, this has not (as usual) been very well thought out.

Dangerous can also apply to the environment. If the animal destroys a native animals habitat it is considered dangerous. Wolves are being reintroduced to the Olympics because they found a tie to salmon loss. While some turtles tear up the areas native turtles sun bath so their out.

My philosophy = "it's only illegal if you get caught". But, the PNWHS has to follow the rules... however, I am not a member of the PNWHS, so it's all good

I look at it like dodo birds or lemmings. Just because someone up front says to do something, it doesn't mean you have to or should do it. We all have free will, use it.

Thats is fine as long as you 'man up' when you get caught and don't go crying to your lawyer... And as long as your pets don't get loose and kill off some native critters in my state... and... and ... well, you get the idea...

I don't want to condone any illegal activity, however, if you wanted to say, go and "look" at some cool salamanders, there are sometimes some available for "looking at" at the shows in Portland. There's one this weekend in Hillsboro.

Just don't look at one so much you end up releasing it into the wild. ;)

Hi everyone.
Thanks for all the (at times) humorous posts.

The Salamander thing has nothing to do with the "dangerous exotic" act. It's the Fish and Wildlife Dept. and it's an "Aquatic Nuisance" law. The part that makes me nuts is that they've allowed Red-eared Sliders because of Pet Industry pressure, while outlawing turtles that don't even live in water. Red-eared Sliders are the most dangerous turtle we have here, as far as displacing native wildlife.

First off, I do not own any animals I am not allowed to own. I am simply saying some "law" against it would not stop me if I wanted to. It's only a $500 fine in Washington for an illegal animal... not like you would have any jail time or anything.

I agree about the sliders. Strange they bow down to major pet corporations but punish the private herp keepers.
