Okay, seems this last litter is 90% dumbos. I have problems with feeding off such cute rats. I would be more then happy to give them away to pet homes when they are weaned. If I know there is an interest in them I'll get them hand tame ASAP. I also still have the two older black berk dumbo girls that I'd give to a pet/breeding home. We're in Everett and I work 7 days a week 7-12 hour days but I'd be willing to drive a short distance.
Also to note. I have since found the male to blame for the recessive dumbo gene. Seems he also has a nice white gene in there somewhere as we have some cow colored babies so I don't really recommend the pups from this litter grow up to be breeders. It is however up to you but I wouldn't. And as always no sign of megacolon or other rat ailments.

I was waiting for this ;) Give me a few minutes to round them up. The littles aren't weaned yet lol. The two older girls are getting big.

Okay, so this first one is the mass of dumbo pups. They are not yet sexed but are oh so dang cute.

This is my favorite out of the litter, it's got a nearly identical twin so I've been calling them Moo and MooToo. This happens to me MooToo

This is the first of the bigger dumbo girls. She's had the most hand time and is easy to pick up and lug around the house.

This is her sister, she's more skittish but not mean.

Are they normal rat size, just w/ the cool ears? :D I like the black one in the middle. :D
Dumbos are so cute. I wish I had space.
I have a kickin' habitrail I got for the ex-feeder. The mondo (2-story) addition was only because I found it used for $10. I could very easily separate the 2 for a cool, fun-loving rodent. All I require is that they play on the wheel.
Kimchee has 2, and barely even uses 1. I'm thinking a specialty hamster might be my best bet, but am always willing to check here 1st.
Just my opinion, but rats are far superior pets to hamsters or mice. (Sorry Kimchee.) They are clean, almost never bite, learn tricks, are affectionate, etc.

I managed a pet store for a year and let me tell you every time a family came in for a hamster or a gerbil (I positively loathe gerbils, evil harbringers of nastyness) I'd try to get them to switch to a rat. Half the time I was successful and I even got a few calls thanking me for turning them onto rats because they were just having a blast with their new pet. The other half of the time gets divided into two sections. The 'I told you so' and the 'Lucked Out'. In the 'I told you so's are the parents who bring back the afore purchased hamster or gerbil because it bit their child... In the 'Lucked Out' are the people who evidently didn't have issues with their chosen pet because I never really heard from them again...though some did come in weekly for food.
That said. I don't think a habitrail would be workable for a rat... you'd have to ask around.
And yes, to the question that asked if they are regular sized rats. Yes, they are. The difference is that their ears are set a little farther down the side of their heads giving them the adorable look.

I'd also like to add that I currently have a hamster. A little dwarf hamster named Chins who, although she's cute as a bugs ear is evil and bitey. I love her and she'll have a home to the end of her cantankerous days but a good pet she would not be for anyone wanting to actually hold her. She attacks everything, her food dish, her veggie treats, her bedding when I put new in... *sigh* so much anger in such a tiny creature. Once in awhile she'll allow you to pet her grace, but you'd better appreciate it because it's few and far between. :)
I TOTALLY second all of that! I have had a series of pet rats and they have all been some of the best pets I've had. Loving, smart and just as sweet as they could be. The only thing I hate about them is their short life span.
Hamsters? I have had a few. Evil, biting monsters. Though I did have a little dwarf that we nice.
Get a rat. You'll never regret it.
I third it :)
I kept rats until I got dogs; they had the run of my apartment whenever I was home when I was in college. excellent, excellent pets - I'd have them now, but they would be in danger from the dogs and the cat and I don't think it would be fair to the rat :(
they're fun, engaging little critters with huge personalities
I have to agree.
We have 4 rats and they are the cutest, most friendly rodents I've ever had. Never so much as a nip from any of them and they adore being handled...even by my 4 yr old son...which says a heck of a lot!
We keep our girls in a Ferret cage. It's 25 wide, 38 high (with stand) and 36 long...plenty of space for hammocks, litter box and wheel along with all of the cardboard playhouses my daughter builds for them...lol :)
I third it :)

This is absolutely the only reason I don't have a pet rat now. I miss mine so much!
Hey Melissa, I've got a friend who has kept rats in the past and died of old age. I mentioned this to her and she is ready to take the plunge again. She has a deluxe, multi-story, rat condo and she would be willing to take 4 or 5 rats once they've been weaned. Feel free to contact me directly and we can work something out. Thanks.
Scott, is this N?
if so, Melissa, she's very cool and would be an excellent home. I vouch for her too!
Yeah, Nikki. I showed her the post this morning and she fell in love.

That would be amazing. I'll make sure they are well used to handling. When they get a tad older I'll take individual pictures of them for her. I'm leaving for work in just a bit so I'll PM you tonight when I get home most likely.

I thought you were going to say that you were looking for homes for the poor orphaned rats whose keeper had died of old age.
Yes, I realized that after I wrote it that it sounded a bit ambiguous. Nikki is alive and well. It's the rats that died of old age.... :)

Well, I sexed the lot today. Six boys four girls. The two with forehead stars are girls, one of the black berks is a girl (she has a HUGE amount of white on her tummy) and one of the other hoodeds is a girl. Everyone else BOYS

Oh you know you want some Cecilia. :) Heck even I'm tempted to keep Moo and MooToo. ;)
Ohhh I love Ratties! Dumbos are so cute too. . . sigh. . .
If my lifestyle was conducive to having a mammal I would be all over these pups.
They're adorable!
And yes, I also agree rats make totally awesome pets. Love them! :p
hmmm...new project....convert saille to mammal ownership!!
Mwuhahahahahhaha!
Really...I have extra. You can have one!
ok, not really. I love them all dearly.
there's always the possiblity of borrowing a mammal for the weekend, to get your fix :)
This is just almost killing me!!!!!!!
I just can't have a rattie with the dogs I have right now. I could never let it out and that would be horrible.
I miss my rats though. :(
I would totally have rats (or some other mammal) if I was home enough to provide it with the attention it requires. But I'm not and my schedule is so sproadic, which is not fair to any mammal pet.
That's partially why I love herps, they don't need the handling I give them the way a mammal craves it. They tolerate it, some of my cresties even seem to enjoy it, but they don't require it.:)
That said, those rattie pups are really cute. I love when they're that age, all little baby fat and soft. Sigh. I guess I'll just have to love them vicariously through you guys.

Aaaak. That first picture is just waaaaay too cute.
Post more of the black ones, before I start spewing pea soup. :p
Hey, isn't this the Year of the Rat?
Seriously, those are revoltingly cute.
Horribly Adorably.
You have been officially Cute Taxed. I am collecting Cute Tax in the form of red Crested Geckos! :D
nope year of the frog i think
Pretty durn sure we're in the year of the Rat (http://chinese.astrology.com/).
And whoa....me to a T (http://chinese.astrology.com/Dragon.aspx) (Y/O the Dragon)
One of the main reasons I have a dragon tattooed down my arm...
I know at least a few others on this forum who fall into this category. And wow. I've totally taken on the role of "Project Manager" (yay, resume) and been the lead investigator on my own projects/studies because no one else could "possibly do it right"... ****. I thought it was just my Virgo influence....
AND, one of my favorite movies/quotes: "I give myself very good advice, but I rarely seldom follow it..." (hence the vintage (not to mention AWESOME) Alice in Wonderland illustrations I have framed on my mantle)
Josh, you are referring to a public awareness campaign started by zoos and biologists to make people aware of the declining numbers of frogs world-wide, and in doing so, to make them also aware that frogs are an "indicator species" for the general health of the planet. 2008 is the Year of the Rat in the Chinese horoscope and Lunar calendar.
So you're both right.

Dude....I felt exactly the same way for the majority of the morning/afternoon today.
Unfortunately, it was my 1st day back after a week off, and I couldn't think of a really good excuse not to come to work....I've always wanted to call in w/ the hanta virus [jk], but a) I work with 10 ridiculously knowledgeable nurses; and b) a case of that has recently turned up (!!!) so everyone is again acutely aware of what the exact symptoms are......as well as exactly what they might sound like over the phone....durnit.
So all you mices handlers...no need to worry [even remotely] quite yet; but not a bad idea to keep on your radar!
hahaha ya my moms an RT at evergreen they're havin a pretty badd MRSA incident i guess
MRSA's been going around rampantly for the past few years. Rodents have nothing to do with it. It's all about identifying patients and quarantining them appropriately. And even before that: have an adequate screening process in place.
We had an awesome little girl, ~6, who had 5 sisters (4 older, 1 younger) come in on a regular basis, with MRSA. We practiced adequate quarantine procedures every time they were in the clinic. The sisters never contracted MRSA. They were only in to see us 2 consecutive days per month. The rest of the time, they were left to their own devices. We had no other confirmed cases of MRSA in the clinic the whole time they were there.
Lesson learned: you either have to be trying really hard to spread/contract MRSA, or have a really really ****ty infection control program.
Not to say your mom's facility has a ****ty infection control program. We're an outpatient facility. It's a whole 'nuther can 'o worms when you have an ER.
thats exactly the problem =]
I studied MRSA when I worked at my last job. we lost the funding to continue...it sucked personally because I really loved that job, but it also seems rather ironic that about 2 years after the job ended, there was this huge public awareness increase regarding MRSA and no one understands why research hasn't cured it yet....go figure

Alrighty then. That was a complete thread heist if I've ever seen one ;) ALL of the little girls available have found an awesome new home with Nicole (can't remember if there is an 'h' in her name, sorry!). Right now I've just got little boys left and I would love to find them a happy forever home.
I would LOVE to provide one a happy, forever home...but I am currently not equipped to do so. :(
To everyone else: You KNOW you need a cute rat as a pet!!!

Last chance on the boys. If they don't go this week I'm going to try one more option before they become dinner, I'd prefer not but I want them all cleared out before hubby gets home and we leave for a week. I also still have some good breeder/potential breeder girls available but they are not hand tame at all.
